Detectives Seek to Identify Man in Murder Case: "Deputies and Tallahassee Police Officers encountered a panicked crowd and discovered that 26-year-old Curtis Brown had been shot and killed. Detectives learned that this incident was gang related and appeared to be a carry over from a local night club. Rival members from the “North Side” street gang and others from the “Holton Street/West Side” gang met near the bicycle rack in front of the McDonald’s restaurant. A verbal argument quickly escalated and multiple subjects pulled handguns and began shooting. The violence left Curtis Brown, an innocent bystander, dead and at least eight others injured. Since then,"
West End to see more police - Winnipeg Free Press: "Police are continuing to search for two men involved in the shootings of Earl and Cook, along with a friend of the victims who ran after the two gunmen and began firing shots that ultimately hit two cars on Agnes Street. The occupants of the cars were thought to be uninvolved in the earlier shootings and were not injured.
The street crime unit that will now focus on the West End was created in October 2005 after then-police chief Jack Ewatski announced Operation Clean Sweep following the shooting death of Philippe Haiart, 17. He was struck by a stray bullet after getting caught in gang crossfire at Maryland Street and Sargent Avenue. The unit was originally set up to target drug dealing, prostitution and weapons offences in the city's West End and North End and has continued since then.
'We have the flexibility with that unit to be able to place it in different spots,' said McCaskill. 'We're never going to be in a position in this city or any other city to put a police officer on every block (and) every corner. And we have to be as flexible as we possibly can to try to gain control of things when they can get out of control.'
Thursday, three bullet holes were in the front of 542 Victor St., a white, two-storey home that's registered to Kinew Housing. Neighbours said a teenage boy lives at the low-income rental home along with two young girls.
The outside of the home had the words 'West Syde,' which stands for a local street gang ,scrawled"

Police respond to Whitey Bulger sighting on Nantucket - BostonHerald.com: "James 'Whitey' Bulger, the Boston gangster now on the FBI’s most wanted list, walking up Main Street Monday afternoon, reports The Inquirer and Mirror.
By the time police caught up with the suspect on Centre Street, they quickly realized it wasn’t the notorious criminal, but rather a New Jersey man on vacation with his wife, and the couple hadn’t even heard of Whitey Bulger before.
Ken Howlett and his wife Lonnie, of central New Jersey, were stopped by officer Suzanne Gale, who asked the man for his identification. Several more officers arrived at the scene, but after it became clear that Howlett was indeed not Bulger, they even stopped to take pictures with the couple."

Alleged gang member convicted of murder in 49th Street Massacre L.A. NOW Los Angeles Times: "Charles Ray Smith, 41, repeatedly shook his head as the verdicts were read in a packed downtown Los Angeles courtroom. In the audience behind him, the mother of the 10-year-old boy wept quietly.
The 2006 slayings shocked the city and were part of a series of high-profile interracial gang crimes that stoked fears among some minority activists of a possible race war. The two gunmen who carried out the attack were described as black, the victims were Latino.
Police said the dead were not connected to gangs but that they suspected the attackers were. But prosecutors argued during the trial that race had little to do with the motive behind the killings.
Prosecutors said the gunmen, armed with AK-47 assault rifles, mistook the victims as rival gang members in a bloody feud between two local gangs.
The jury deliberated about two weeks before finding Smith guilty of the murders and the attempted murder of a 12-year-old boy wounded in the attack. The two boys who were shot were brothers and had been riding their bicycles in front of their South Los Angeles home.
Jurors also found Smith guilty in a separate fatal shooting of a construction worker three months earlier. The convictions mean Smith could face the death penalty."
