Juan "Mono" Gonzalez, 20, and Edgar Fernandez, 19, who had pregnant wives, were ambushed outside Marcios bar in Corona and shot several times, witnesses said.A hooded gunman leapt from the shadows along 54th Ave. and began shooting just as Gonzalez, Fernandez and a third friend walked past at 1 a.m., witnesses said. The two victims tried to turn and run away but were felled by several slugs to their chests.Rose Hidalgo, 42, who lives on the block, said she heard at least five shots in quick succession.Another area resident came upon the grim scene moments later."I came out to the street and saw a kid lying there on the ground," he said, declining to give his name. "He was already dead."Fernandez died on the bloody sidewalk while Gonzalez expired at New York Hospital-Queens an hour later. Friends said both were members of the Trinitarios gang and had been targeted by the Latin Kings as retaliation for an earlier shooting."It was revenge," said a friend who only gave his nickname, Glue. "This s-- just gets dumber and dumber. Too much blood on these streets."They were both just talking about how excited they were to be fathers," said Glue. "This is sickening."The victims' friend managed to escape, while the gunman fled. Detectives were back at the crime scene after the sun came up and were examining a silver Honda that had its windshield shot out.
Relatives said Fernandez, who had a job at a local dry cleaner and was a fixture at neighborhood barbecues, was a responsible father-to-be who got mixed up with the wrong crowd."Edgar was a good kid. It didn't have to go down like this," said cousin Al Lopez, 26. "Edgar had a brain, he could have done something with his life."
Residents of the working-class, heavily-Latino neighborhood said gang-related violence was surging in Corona — and they feared the morning's shooting would lead to yet another revenge hit."It's dangerous out there [and] you never know who's going to confuse you with someone else," said Jose Ramirez, 25, resident of the block. "I'm afraid to come around here at that time of night."
