Prison inmate was flown to University Hospital on Tuesday afternoon after he was stabbed multiple times during a gang fight. Emergency responders on the scene said the 32-year-old victim was stabbed -- in his jaw, back, chest and in his neck -- by another inmate armed with a stick that had a 2-inch nail embedded in the end. Unified Fire Authority Capt. Clint Smith said it happened in Draper's the Utah State Prison infirmary around 3:45 p.m. Due to the severity of the man's wounds, the prison's medical staff called out for help from emergency responders, including a helicopter. "They felt it was serious enough that going by ground was not wise," Smith said. "They wanted to get him to the hospital as quickly Salt Lake County sheriff's Lt. Don Hutson said the victim was "totally uncooperative" and his wounds are not believed to be life-threatening. Deputy Director of Corrections Mike Haddon said four inmates were involved in the fight, but only the one injured man was being transported to the hospital. The others involved suffered only minor injuries associated with a typical fistfight, Hutson said. The inmates' names have not been released. Haddon said prison officials would conduct an investigation. The stabbing comes one week after another Utah prison inmate was stabbed with a shank. That inmate was injured July 27 in one of the prison's high-security areas during an altercation with a fellow prisoner.
