21-year old Armondo Castro wanted to be a member of Vicky's Town gang.
To get in, he had to be beat in.But something went wrong, yet Castro's initiators posted the beating on YouTube in plain sight for police to find. The initiation is called a jump in or a court in.Normally the beating lasts a couple of seconds and a new member is born. But according to the criminal complaint Armondo Castro took blows from fists, kicks and stomps. The beating didn't stop until one of the members stomped Castro on the head.Jerry Simon works as a gang specialist for the Juvenile Justice Department."Gangs are in this phase of constantly having to prove themselves," Simon says.According to the arrest report, Castro wanted to be a member of the gang Vicky's town. But Castro's beating ended with him in the hospital just hours later, dead from a sub dermal hematoma. We went to Castro's neighborhood, knocked on his door, and his sister answered. She says she fears gang retaliation and doesn't want to get involved.Simon tells Action News Vicky's Town is a well established gang in Las Vegas."They've been here for a very long time," he says.
But according to Simon it is unusual for a gang to kill, accidentally or not, an alleged new member. In fact most have moved away from the 'jump in' practice. Its simply more profitable to initiate with work, like robbing a store or selling drugs.
As for the investigation, three suspects are charged, but Metro says it is still ongoing at this time.
