white four-wheel-driven through the front window of Al Aseel restaurant on Bay Street in Brighton-le-Sands about 11.20pm.
They ignited the vehicle and left it to burn through the single-storey building, gutting the inside and leaving the roof blackened and buckled. The restaurant was owner Charlie Obeid's second venture following the success of his Greenacre eatery of the same name.
A restaurant in the Sydney suburb of Brighton-Le-Sands was wrecked after two men apparently drove a vehicle through the front and set fire to it.Mr Obeid said he was in shock and did not know who targeted his business."We didn't have problems with anyone really. This was our second restaurant and we've got the catering business as well," he said."Things were on the up and up and this brings us down again."Mr Obeid said neither he nor any family members had ties to bikie gangs. The restaurant had not received any threats since it opened three weeks ago."This was just out of the blue," Mr Obeid said.Mr Obeid said he spent $400,000 on the new restaurant. It served breakfast, lunch and dinner.Al Aseel at Greenacre was awarded a star in the Sydney Morning Herald 2009 Good Food Guide.
Police do not believe the fire had anything to do with recent bikie-related violence targeting nearby businesses."It's the early stages of the investigation but we're not aware of any connections with other crimes that have occurred," Superintendent Helen Begg said."There is no evidence at this stage to suggest a link to outlaw motorcycle gangs."However, Superintendent Begg said investigators would "examine all avenues".She said she was not aware of any racial tension in the area. One of the men seen running from the restaurant was wearing an Everlast branded hooded jumper. He was described as being of Middle Eastern appearance, about 24 years old, with short, black, spiked hair. The other man was also believed to be aged about 24, of large build, about 170 centimetres tall and was wearing a dark balaclava.
Superintendent Begg said police had seized the four-wheel-drive's number plates and were also looking at CCTV footage taken in the area.It was not known if the car was stolen, she said. The restaurant had closed just an hour before the attack, Superintendent Begg said.
