Police in Metro Vancouver were called to the scene of four separate shooting incidents, which left two dead. The first shooting took place around 8 p.m. Tuesday at a Burnaby highrise, leaving a woman dead and a man seriously injured. Police could not immediately confirm if the incident was gang-related and said it could be a case of domestic violence. Then at around 9 p.m., residents in an east Vancouver neighbourhood reported hearing several shots fired. Police discovered the body of a man in his 20s slumped over the wheel of a car. Vancouver Police Insp. Bob Chapman said the fatal shooting had "all the earmarks" of another gangland-style hit.
"He had blood on his face, there were shell casings on the ground, so right now we are investigating a homicide," Chapman said. Meanwhile, Mounties said a man in his 20s suffered gunshot wounds in an incident Tuesday night in south Surrey. The man was not found at the scene but took himself to a Surrey hospital later for treatment of his gunshot wounds. In the final incident Tuesday, Mounties also reported a drive-by shooting occurred in Surrey around midnight, although nobody was hurt. In recent weeks, nearly two dozen shootings have been reported in Greater Vancouver, nine of them fatal. Earlier Tuesday, Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu held a news conference to announce the arrest of the leader of the UN Gang and a number of his associates in what he called "a major blow, to the gangs generally and to the UN gang specifically." Chu said it was with satisfaction that he was able to say "We caught the bad guy." He said the public had told them they were sick of reading headlines about another gang shooting in their neighbourhood. "To them I say, I understand and share your frustration but now you can get used to reading a different headline, one that shouts 'Police Arrest Another Gangster,'" he said. Unfortunately, just hours later, that headline was overshadowed by reports about the Tuesday night shootings.
Police have promised additional arrests in the coming days.
Vancouver resident Barzan Tilli-Choli, 26, who police say is a UN Gang leader, faces two charges of attempted murder, along with 23-year-old gang associate Aram Ali of Vancouver and 26-year-old Nicola Cottrell of New Westminster, B.C.
