Farrugia jailed for Moran manslaughter: "A man who pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Melbourne underworld figure Des ‘‘Tuppence’’ Moran has been sentenced to four years’ jail.
Michael Sam Farrugia, 46, of Myrniong, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court last month to one count of manslaughter. Mr Moran was shot dead at a deli on Union Road, Ascot Vale, on June 15 last year.
Farrugia has made two statements about what happened and has also given an undertaking to become a prosecution witness in the murder trial of three co-accused.

In sentencing him today in Victoria’s Supreme Court, Justice Lex Lasry told Farrugia there was no question that ‘‘the information in your statements is of great importance in this case’’.
‘‘In the trial of your three accomplices, the Crown will place substantial weight on your evidence.
'‘There is no question that you are entitled to a substantial discount for the information you have provided in your statements and for your willingness to give evidence in the forthcoming trial.’’
Justice Lasry added: ‘‘I do regard your plea as indicative of your willingness to take responsibility for what you did and a level of remorse and I take it into account on that basis’’."

Police have nabbed 42 people for narcotic, gang and other offenses and seized guns, drugs and cash during a five-month-old partnership with federal drug and immigration officials, officers announced Wednesday.
In a packed roll call room at the Santa Cruz Police Department, investigators displayed 10 guns and numerous plastic bags filled with about $25,000 cash plus chunks of cocaine, methamphetamine, ecstasy and marijuana gained in an effort dubbed Operation Southern Exposure. The name reflects the gangs the operation targets.
Santa Cruz police entered a partnership with the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Drug Enforcement Agency in May, after a spike in violence that included murders of two Santa Cruz teens who crossed the path of alleged gang members.
“We are completely thrilled with the results to date,” DEA agent Amie Clarke said. “There have been some significant arrests.”
Of the 42 people arrested, nine were detained by immigration officials, six were Mara Salvatrucha gang members and three were Sureño gang members, said Joe Vincent, a special agent in a San Jose ICE office serving four counties.

Brian Hanlon was driving on Maryhill Road at about 2330 BST on Sunday when his Audi S4 was forced off the road by another vehicle outside Kelvin Campus.

The CPS Crown Prosecution Service said: "We have today dropped a charge of murder at Liverpool Crown Court against Arran Coghlan.
"Mr Coghlan was charged on 13 February with the murder of Stephen Akinyemi after an incident at Mr Coghlan's home in Alderley Edge.
"The decision to charge Mr Coghlan was made on the evidence available at the time and it was expected that further evidence would be available."
It is now likely that Arran Coghlan will attempt to prosecute the police for wrongful arrest, this career criminal has substantial wealth and connections and he never lets a negative in his life, go unchecked!
He is very well known through out the criminal world and is known by friends and associates as ‘Az’ the same name as the registration letters on his luxury Bentley Turbo car.
He is reputed to be a drugs lord operating as the King Pin of a gang based in the north east of England

Happened on July 30, 2010
The 29-year-old was shot dead in the Asda car park in Saughs Road, in the city's Robroyston area, on 13 January.
He allegedly had links to organised crime in Glasgow and had survived two previous attempts on his life.
The 28-year-old man being detained in connection with Mr Carroll's death is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.
Mr Carroll was shot several times while sitting in the rear of a black Audi car.
Guns used in the shooting were found by a member of the public behind Coatbridge library in North Lanarkshire, almost a fortnight later.
In March, a 30-year-old man was arrested by police investigating the murder of Mr Carroll.
Craig Gallagher was later released pending further enquiries.

Brothers shot dead as Dublin gang war erupts: "Paul Corbally (35) and his brother Kenneth (32) were in a car in the Neilstown Road area of Clondalkin, west Dublin, just after 8pm when they were gunned down in cold blood.
Both brothers died at the scene. Gardai were trying to establish whether the injured teenager was in the car with the Corbally brothers or was a bystander. The teenager was hit in the arm. It is understood his injuries are not life threatening.

They have flushed out firms as varied as second-hand car dealerships and tanning salons that they believe are being used as cover for major gangland figures.
Strathclyde Police used Proceeds of Crime laws to freeze some £3.5 million in assets at the companies and seized more than another £300,000 in goods and cash during their six-week Operation Enterprise.
But they have also, for the first time, revealed the true scale of criminal infiltration of Glasgow’s business world.

The court heard 36 such drug smuggling cases in 2009, 28.5 percent more than in 2008.
In 2008, the court issued verdicts in 28 drug smuggling trials involving foreigners and seized 54 kg of drugs, 30 percent and 90 percent more respectively than 2007. Heroin and methamphetamine, known as 'ice', are the dominant illicit drugs.
Last year, all courts in Beijing handled a total of 1,318 drug cases involving 1,713 suspects and convicted offenders, an increase of 92 percent and 103 percent respectively on the 2006 figures.
During the past three years, the percentages of criminals who got sentences were 92.1 percent, 94.3 percent and 97 percent.
The courts are also meting out tougher penalties.
Almost 20 percent of criminals got severe punishment with prison terms of more than five years; some received death sentences."
