Farrugia jailed for Moran manslaughter: "A man who pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Melbourne underworld figure Des ‘‘Tuppence’’ Moran has been sentenced to four years’ jail.
Michael Sam Farrugia, 46, of Myrniong, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court last month to one count of manslaughter. Mr Moran was shot dead at a deli on Union Road, Ascot Vale, on June 15 last year.
Farrugia has made two statements about what happened and has also given an undertaking to become a prosecution witness in the murder trial of three co-accused.
Advertisement: Story continues below The co-accused are Moran’s sister-in-law Judy Moran, her relative Suzanne Kane and Kane’s de facto husband, Geoff Armour. The Crown has alleged that Armour was the gunman. All three will face trial in January.
In sentencing him today in Victoria’s Supreme Court, Justice Lex Lasry told Farrugia there was no question that ‘‘the information in your statements is of great importance in this case’’.
‘‘In the trial of your three accomplices, the Crown will place substantial weight on your evidence.
'‘There is no question that you are entitled to a substantial discount for the information you have provided in your statements and for your willingness to give evidence in the forthcoming trial.’’
Justice Lasry added: ‘‘I do regard your plea as indicative of your willingness to take responsibility for what you did and a level of remorse and I take it into account on that basis’’."

Street gang boss pleads guilty to drug charges: "It took less than four months for Emmanuel Zephir to find himself at the centre of a major drug trafficking ring after serving a five-year prison term for killing a man.
Details of Zephir's quick ascent from leaving a federal penitentiary in January 2006 to running a drug ring that sold 250 grams of cocaine a week were made public at the Montreal courthouse yesterday as Zephyr, leader of the Syndicate street gang, pleaded guilty to seven charges filed in Project Axe, the Montreal police investigation that led to the arrests of 55 people early in 2009.
Zephyr, 38, had served the prison term for killing a rival gang member in June 1999 during a party at a reception hall in St. Leonard.
The killing is just part of a criminal past that includes an episode in which Zephyr once pushed a man he believed was a police informant out of a moving car.
Zephyr appeared bored yesterday as he pleaded guilty to conspiring to traffic in cocaine, trafficking cocaine, producing crack cocaine, and four related charges."

List of "rules" found in street gang leader's home: "Sentencing arguments have begun in a drug trafficking case involving the reputed leader of one of the more notorious street gangs in Montreal.
Chenier (Big) Dupuy, 34, was described by a Montreal police street gang expert as the leader of the BoGars, a gang that has been present in Montreal North for years. A personal note found at a residence in Laval where Dupuy was living when he was arrested for trafficking in cocaine in 2008 indicates he had plans to expand his gang’s reach well beyond Montreal North.
The note reads like a to-do list but is titled “Ten Rules to Follow” – despite the fact there are actually 11. At least one rule was philosophic. It read “Rule the order within disorder.”
Rule number nine for Dupuy was “expansion mtl, l.a., Stl, ont.”"

Hitman link to top Hollywood agent's murder - Americas, World - The Independent: "It was meticulously planned, and the person who pulled the trigger may very well have been a professional contract killer. Those are the sombre conclusions of police investigating the murder of Ronni Chasen, the veteran Hollywood publicist who was gunned down on her way home from a film premiere two weeks ago.
The 64-year-old was shot as she drove her Mercedes through Beverly Hills late at night. The initial coroner's report, which has been obtained by the Los Angeles television station KTTV, reveals her assailant used at least one hollow-pointed bullet, a type preferred by hitmen since it causes maximum internal damage.
At least four, and perhaps as many as seven, shots were fired into the passenger-side window from a vehicle which pulled up alongside Ms Chasen's car as she waited at traffic lights on the junction between Sunset Boulevard and Whittier Drive"
