Radio Olimpia, a station that operated an unlicensed transmitter from premises in the mafia-ridden city of Rosarno, was one of five companies closed and sequestered by police in an operation that also led to the arrest of 30 people accused of involvement in the Calabrian mafia or 'Ndrangheta. Another 10 for whom arrest warrants were issued were still on the run.
Michele Prestipino, the deputy chief prosecutor of Reggio Calabria who co-ordinated the operation, wryly codenamed Operation All Inside, told reporters Radio Olimpia was "an important means of communication in the context of the clan's strategies".
It was particularly suited for sending messages to jailed mobsters such as Pesce, who police believe was keen to know about the outcome of an application by his lawyer for his release.
Police listening in on a conversation between Pesce and his wife at Palmi jail in southern Italy heard him talking about record requests and concluded there was more to it than a love of music.
According to a transcript leaked to the daily Il Giornale, Pesce told his wife, after scribbling down the name of a tune: "If it's positive you send me [this] song on the radio tonight. If it's negative you send me another."
This week's raids were the culmination of investigations launched four years two into two gangland murders. The Pesce clan is one of two that have traditionally held sway in a city that in January witnessed vicious clashes between local people and migrant workers.
As in many 'Ndrangheta "families", women played an important role. Seven of those arrested in Operation All Inside were women. They included one alleged to have been the clan's treasurer – a key post normally occupied by a senior male gangster.

No one was injured, Robertson said. Shell casings were found on the ground, but officers concluded the shots were fired into the air because no bullet holes could be found.
The people at the party refused to cooperate with police and explain what had happened, Robertson said. Officers were unable to determine who fired the shots, and no one was arrested"

The 39-year-old underworld boss was held in a modern maximum security wing in one of Australia's most secure jails, sitting off Bacchus Marsh Rd on open, flat country near the port city of Geelong.
Other notorious criminals have survived there.
Gangland lawyer Mario Condello, charged with conspiring to murder Williams, died only when he was released on bail to stand trial.
Others remain alive behind Barwon's walls: Julian Knight, who killed seven and injured 19 in the 1987 Hoddle street massacre; serial killer Paul Denyer; drug trafficker and Williams' associate Tony Mockbel; and Francesco Mangione, who killed a cousin in a Mister Whippy turf war.
But on Monday, as Williams sat reading a newspaper in a common room with two trusted inmates, he was bludgeoned to death with an exercise bike bar.
He triggered the decade-long gangland wars that killed as many as 30 victims by revenge attacks on the rival Moran clan after he was shot in the stomach during a dispute over the amphetamines trade.
The carnage of the war was often brutally public. Jason Moran, scion of the long-established crime family, was shot dead with associate Barbaro Pasquale in front of five children.
His father Lewis was gunned down in a Brunswick club. Others were killed in a supermarket carpark, in busy city streets, and outside shops and restaurants.
Williams was known to have been responsible for the deaths of at least 10 rivals. He pleaded guilty to four, and to conspiring to murder another, in a deal that put him behind bars for a minimum 35 years but gave him some hope of dying a free man.
Between them, Williams and his enemies virtually wiped each other out. Infamous former gangster Mark "Chopper" Read noted on Adelaide radio: "There's only me and (underworld identity) Mick Gatto left."
But the Acacia Unit murder has opened an entire new set of wounds for Melbourne. Even if police believe renewed killings are unlikely to erupt among the survivors, the wars have left a vacuum that others will fight to fill.
And in a city too often rocked in the past by corruption, the nature of Williams' death and possible links to bent police are too obvious to ignore.
New Jersey law enforcement officials have announced charges against 18 members of a violent set of the Bloods street gang..Attorney General Paula Dow said Tuesday that the members of the Trey Nine Headbusters carried out orders from reputed leader Michael Anderson, who is serving time in state prison for related crimes.

veteran mobster was arrested after 17 years on the run, but a sympathetic crowd cheered him on Tuesday as he was escorted out of a police barracks and taken to jail.
Giovanni Tegano, a member of the 'ndrangheta organized crime group, was on the list of Italy's top 30 most wanted fugitives. Officials described the 70-year-old as a notorious figure in the crime-ridden area and hailed his arrest as a tough blow to the 'ndrangheta, a crime syndicate based in the poor region of Calabria.
Police cordoned-off the cheering crowd of scores of people as Tegano was leaving the police headquarters in Reggio Calabria, southern Italy, on Tuesday.
"Giovanni is a man of peace!" one woman shouted. The white-haired, bespectacled Tegano smiled and waved back.
"Given his role, seniority and the importance of events he knew, he had risen to the ranks of one of the 'ndrangheta's most important figures," said top police official Renato Cortese. Tegano's years in hiding added to his charisma in the eyes of fellow mobsters, Cortese said.
The 'ndrangheta, linked to crime around the world, is today considered more powerful than the Sicilian Mafia.
Tegano is regarded as one of the few remaining mobsters of the 'ndrangheta's old guard. He was implicated in a turf war in the mid-1980s that left scores dead, and for that he has been convicted to life in jail.
Officials said the mobster was apprehended Monday evening in a house on the hills surrounding Reggio Calabria, the regional capital. Also arrested were five men who were with him and are accused of helping him during his years as a fugitive.
Tegano did not resist arrest, though he had a loaded gun with him, Cortese said.
Jerry Capeci: Top Gambino Wiseguy, Crew, Hit With Undignifed Sexploitation Raps: "He's not the Boss of the Gambino family, and he's twice the gangster that Big Paul Castellano ever was. But Daniel Marino is in the same embarrassing predicament that engulfed the late businessman-boss of their powerful crime family back in March of 1984.
That was when Castellano's endless quest for cash tied him to a murderous crew of drug-dealing car thieves who ate pizza as they dismembered the bodies of their victims for quick and easy disposal. It was very undignified company for the Boss to be keeping. Even at trial."

It promises to 'set the record straight' and 'take the romance out of mob stories'.
The Mob Experience, to be displayed at the Tropicana casino on the Strip, has no intention of taking the romance out of organised crime. Strip club shutdown may be linked to Old Montreal shooting: "Club Temptation, on Ste. Catherine St. W., saw its license suspended temporarily on Tuesday because the Montreal police fear that it might be the location of a retaliation to the March 18 shooting at Flawnego, a clothing boutique owned by Ducarme Joseph, an influential street gang leader. Joseph survived the shooting but one of his close associates was killed.
A notice issued by the Regie des Alcools, summoning the owner of the strip club to a hearing earlier this week, details how the Montreal police believe Richard Goodridge, a 41-year-old man who grew up in Lachine and had past ties to Joseph, and his associates were believed to frequent at the strip bar. The Montreal police went so far as to allege Goodridge, who has an extensive criminal record, unofficially became part owner of the bar in 2008 “in association with members of the Italian Mafia in Montreal”. The owner, Joseph Vallera, agreed to the temporary suspension but denies Goodridge is a part owner of the club. In 2009, however, he confirmed to the police that Goodridge worked for the club as a promoter."

Gang suspect goes on trial in double homicide case - CharlotteObserver.com: "Alejandro Umana, 25, is also charged with conspiring to extort money from Charlotte drug dealers to increase MS-13's revenues and to intimidate witnesses to prevent them from cooperating with law enforcement authorities investigating the gang's activities.
Umana is accused of killing two brothers in a restaurant in Greensboro in December 2007. He killed them, prosecutors allege, to maintain MS-13's reputation and to advance his position within the gang's criminal enterprise.
Prosecutors have said they will introduce evidence during the trial that Umana also killed two men in Los Angeles in 2005 and participated in a third killing in that city that same year.
It's only the second time that federal prosecutors have sought the death penalty in Charlotte since capital punishment was reinstated for federal crimes in 1988.
Aquilia Barnette was sentenced to death in 1998 for the murders of a motorist in Charlotte and his former girlfriend in Roanoke, Va. His sentence was overturned, but he was sentenced to death again in 2002.
Umana was among 26 suspected MS-13 gang members indicted in Charlotte in 2008. Prosecutors alleged that the gang was part of an international organization that committed crimes across Charlotte, including robbery, racketeering, extortion and murder.
Defense lawyers had sought to prevent prosecutors from seeking the death penalty against Umana. They argued that Umana couldn't be tried for his life because he is mentally retarded. Their client, they said, has an IQ of 66. An IQ score of 70 or lower is considered mentally retarded."

Lewis testified last week to take the blame for the attack, but he said he couldn't remember most of the night's events because he was drunk and had taken marijuana and PCP.

Rapper's lawyer, cop agree that ex-screw never ran with street gangs: - ThisIs50.com: "rapper Rick Ross would have his fans believe that he made millions trafficking cocaine while running with one of Miami's violent street gangs. Of course, that claim took a hit recently with the disclosure that Ross (real name: William Leonard Roberts) actually once worked as a corrections officer, news that was met with derision in hip-hop circles. Now, records show that Ross's own lawyer last year disputed reports that the performer has ever been affiliated with any gang. Ross's purported hoodlum connections were explored last April during a deposition of Officer Rey Hernandez, a Miami Beach cop who arrested Ross in January 2008 on gun and marijuana charges (one of the few blemishes on Ross's rap sheet). As seen in the below transcript excerpts, Ross's lawyer, Allan Zamren, asked Hernandez why Ross's case was assigned to the gang task force. 'Because your client claims affiliation with Carol City Cartel and other known gang members,' Hernandez replied. The cop then directed Zamren to 'some literature or video on U-Tube that you can pull up for yourself.' Zamren then proceeded to press Hernandez on Ross's supposed gang ties. 'Do you have anybody from a Carol City gang that you have information on or basis of any knowledge that says he is affiliated with them?' Hernandez answered, 'No.' Zamren then asked, 'Do you have anything that shows you he was affiliated with any gang?' Hernandez replied, 'No, I do not.'"
Drug gang hangs two from bridge near Mexico City - Yahoo! News: "Suspected drug hitmen hung the bodies of two men off a major bridge on Friday in a weekend get-away near Mexico City in the latest brazen act of drug violence near the capital.
The two men were found stripped to the waist and hung by the neck from the bridge near a shopping mall early Friday morning in Cuernavaca, said the attorney general's office for Morelos state, which includes the city.
Mexican media reported the hitmen riddled the bodies with bullets before fleeing the scene.
'Given the characteristics of this act, the killings appear to be linked to drug cartels and it is something we are seeing more of in the area,' said a spokesman for the attorney general's office who declined to be named.
Drug violence is raging across Mexico and almost 20,000 people have died in the fight among cartels and with Mexican security forces since President Felipe Calderon launched his army-led crackdown on drug gangs in late 2006."
Fulton deputy pleads not guilty to corruption, drug charges ajc.com: "grand jury indicted Anthony Atwater on Tuesday on five charges, including extortion and aiding and abetting cocaine distribution after federal agents said he was protecting suspected drug dealers in January and in March.
He was arrested Friday morning during roll call.
Atwater appeared briefly before U.S. Magistrate Russell Vineyard at 1:30 p.m. A bond hearing is scheduled for next Tuesday at 3 p.m. He will remain in jail until then.

Atwater was given $4,000 to protect the dealers during drug transactions made on Jan. 23 and March 12, the U.S. the document said.

arrested alleged members of the city’s notorious Westside gang after being alerted by witnesses who said gang members had committed a robbery. On March 27, prior to 2:38 a.m., a group of young people was walking in the 2900 block of College Avenue when they were robbed by another group. According to Berkeley police spokesperson Officer Jamie Perkins, a 20-year-old female victim was robbed of her personal belongings, including her purse, with gun threats from the suspects. Perkins said the victim was from out of town. The suspects physically attacked and attempted to rob a male victim in the group, but did not take anything. They then fled the scene in a vehicle. Witnesses present at the scene reported to the Berkeley Police Department that they had seen a vehicle in the area. The police broadcast the information, and UC Police Department officers located the vehicle. The suspects were identified by eyewitnesses and the victims and later arrested.
Perkins said that a total of six people were arrested, including three adults and three minors. Among those arrested were Aubrey Blank, 20, and Yuvette Martinez, 18, who were charged with robbery, attempted robbery and committing a felony in association with a criminal street gang. Jesus Diaz, 21, was charged with robbery and attempted robbery, committing a felony while being a known gang member, resisting arrest and vandalism to a UCPD vehicle. The minors included two boys and one girl who were arrested for similar charges and sent to the Alameda County Juvenile Hall. Perkins said she did not know about the suspects’ affiliation in terms of educational institutions, but they did not appear to be Berkeley residents.
“It’s safe to say that some of them are members of the Westside gang,” Perkins said. “We have arrested members of that gang before for various crimes, including robbery.”
Two counts of driving while her licence was suspended were dropped at Heidelberg Magistrates' Court without explanation.
"The charges carrying the threat of prison have been withdrawn," her lawyer Emma Turnbull told the court. Magistrate Jillian Crowe responded: "Lucky."
Williams has three convictions for driving while suspended and a third conviction for the offence carries a mandatory jail term.
When Williams faced court on her third conviction in 2007 her jail term was suspended after she said she cared for her dying sister's child.
Williams, of Essendon, yesterday pleaded guilty to a count of executing an illegal turn, and two counts of driving an unregistered vehicle.
She was fined $1200 and the magistrate was told she can reapply for a licence next week.
Williams is the former wife of drug boss and underworld killer Carl Williams, who is serving a minimum 35 years in prison.
Ms Turnbull said Williams was driving her deceased mother-in-law's car and realised she should not have been behind the wheel.
The lawyer said her client had been ill and was released from hospital last week.
Prosecutor Danny Steele said police alleged Williams executed the illegal turn to avoid a booze bus.
Ms Turnbull said her client disputed this and said that she crossed two lanes .
